Cynthia’s background in fashion design and retail is highlighted with significant experience in the Chicago, New York and Detroit markets. In Chicago she designed children’s wear, and also served as assistant designer and pattern maker to Catherine Scott in her exclusive Oak Street store. When Scott’s store closed, Cynthia began a long association with Irwin Ware and his Michigan Avenue Bonwit Teller fur salon, where her niche was fitting and designing custom fur garments. This experience eventually culminated in her moving to New York to manage Ware’s New York design office. In New York Cynthia worked with designer Arnold Scassi to create his signature line of furs.
In New York she was the head designer for Christian Dior Furs. Later Cynthia moved to Michigan where she opened her own business, Cynthia DeWolfe Inc. It was in this enterprise that she launched her own line of reversible fur coats which sold to stores such as Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel. Eventually Cynthia expanded the line to include a custom line of suits and coats which were offered in fine specialty stores in the Midwest. Since closing her business, Cynthia has remained involved with fashion and design, working at Saks Fifth Avenue, Hudson’s and the Michigan Design Center. She also lends her expertise to local theatre groups, designing and creating costumes for the stage.
